The University Health Services Department is responsible for both curative and preventive health care provision for the University Community. The Department which started as a small unit manned by a Nursing Superintendent in 1967, has gradually grown to its current size of two Clinics (one each in the Old and New Campuses) and 2 health posts (one each at the Zoo Road Staff Residence and ICE, Dala).

The UHS seek to fulfil its mandate through the activities or services of the following units.

  • Appointments

  • Pharmacy

  • X-ray

  • Laboratory

 

 

Activities of the Department...

The University Health Services has two standing activities which are Curative Services and Preventive Services

Curative Services

i. Outpatient Services- comprising mainly general medical, dental, ophthalmic and psychosocial care are rendered at the Out-Patients Department (OPD). Minor outpatient surgical procedures are also provided. The clinic conducts uncomplicated deliveries at the Old Campus. Inpatient Services - At the two Main Clinics, admission facilities are provided to patients for periods not exceeding three days. Thereafter, patients are discharged or referred to bigger hospitals for further management.
ii. Emergency Services - 24-hour emergency services are provided at the two Clinics. Emergency cases that cannot be effectively managed are immediately referred to Aminu Kano Teaching
Hospital or National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, the two Hospitals with which the University has emergency retainership accounts.
iii. Diagnostic Services – There are wellequipped Laboratory and X-ray Units where various investigations including ultrasound scanning are carried out.
iv. Pharmaceutical Services – At the two Main Clinics, well stocked pharmacies, manned by qualified staff are provided to ensure effective patient management

Preventive Services

i. Maternal and Child Health: including antenatal care, family planning and child welfare services.
ii. Routine and mass vaccinations against common preventable diseases.
iii. Environmental Health Services: The Environmental Health Unit carries out house to house inspections to ensure effective sanitation and also supervises casual labourers who clean the University compound and pool toilets.The Unit also carries out routine inspection of business premises and canteens on campus, to ensure food hygiene.
